Jean is a Sydney-based realist artist with a particular interest in 2D and 3D portraiture. After receiving a Ph.D. in Pure Mathematics at Cambridge (UK) in 1993, he worked in mathematical finance and investment until 2007. His interests next turned to art, culminating in three years of full time study at Julian Ashton Art School from 2010 - 2012. In 2010 he received the Marjorie Santow Prize for tonal drawing at the School, and in both 2011 and 2012 the George Lambert Prize for Sculpture. At the end of 2012 he was awarded a part-time 2013 Sydney School of Mechanics Scholarship at Julian Ashton. He was a finalist in the 2013 KAAF Prize and a semi-finalist in the 2015 Moran Portrait Prize. His works are held in private collections in Australia, the UK and the US. Aside from continued study in drawing, painting and sculpture, he is keenly interested in colour theory and in 2011 published an app to demonstrate paint mixing to beginner painters.
